The Indonesian MSME’s Financial Health Still Far from the Ideal Score, Bank OCBC NISP Encourage Entrepreneurs #BeraniNaikLevel with Business Fitness Solution by Nyala Bisnis

31 May 2023

Jakarta, 31 May 2023 – Bank OCBC NISP who is committed to support MSME players in Indonesia is proud to launch Nyala Bisnis, a business solution to help Indonesian entrepreneurs #BeraniNaikLevel (dare to level up). Through Nyala Bisnis, MSMEs not only are able to manage & develop their business with Business Banking solutions but are also provided with support in the form of educational activities and entrepreneurs community to share knowledge and experience through Business Fitness Solution.

Based on ASEAN Investment Report 2022 data that published by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), the number of MSMEs in Indonesia reached 65.46 million, which contributed 60.3% to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and was able to absorb 97% of the workforce in Indonesia.

However, MSMEs are still facing various challenges in managing, planning and funding their business. This is reflected in OCBC NISP Business Fitness Index 2023, a research conducted to measure the financial health of a business. The survey results show that the average score of all business scales is 43.84, which is still far from the ideal score of 75. This means that the majority of Indonesian MSMEs financial health needs to be improved.

"Even though the financial health of the majority of Indonesian MSMEs is still not ideal, we must be optimistic that the score will gradually improve. Bank OCBC NISP believes that inclusion accompanied by qualified business training will make Indonesian MSMEs #BeraniNaikLevel and continue to be adaptive, innovative and highly competitive. Through Nyala Bisnis, we will continue to synergize in supporting the empowerment of MSMEs in order to increase financial inclusion and support Indonesia economic growth. Nyala Bisnis is also one of the Bank's initiatives in supporting various government programs in order to increase the potential of MSMEs in Indonesia," said Heriwan Gazali, Head of Retail Loan Business Bank OCBC NISP.

In terms of business management, 44% of MSMEs in Indonesia still mix their personal and business finances. In fact, these two things should be separated in order to make it easier for them to maintain a healthier business financial condition. Furthermore, 75% of MSMEs in Indonesia admit that they have kept financial records; however, 80% of them still keep financial records manually in this all-digital era. Moreover, only 34% of MSMEs use digital products for their business and operations.

On planning, most MSMEs still need to improve their ability to meet and manage business financial conditions, including in planning to get additional funding during an emergency. It is reflected in the index, showing 53% of MSMEs do not understand how to estimate a budget, income, funds for running their business and how to get emergency funds. As a result of this low awareness of planning, the average Indonesian MSMEs (50%) only have reserve funds that can support operational activities for 1-4 months.

The low intention of Indonesian MSMEs to apply for capital loans is caused by limited access to information from financial institutions and the limited amount or value of collateral. Not only that, there are still many MSMEs that do not systematically and irregularly record their finances (52%) which can also prevent them from obtaining credit facilities from banks or other credit providers.

"In order for MSMEs to #BeraniNaikLevel, entrepreneurs can revolutionize their perspective when they start a business, as well as carry out financial operational transformations to grow the business. Hence, it's more systematic and not only focus on instant profit, but also focus on more sustainable business growth," added Heriwan.
